2016 LINE-UP ANNOUNCED!
Yes, your Festival organisers’ annual hibernation has come to a natural conclusion and we are awake with news – the news of the line-up for this year. And without further ado, here it is :
Headlining 2016 will be Gaelic supergroup DÀIMH. Recent accolades include last year’s award for the “Best Folk Band in Europe” at the prestigious Folkherbst competition in Germany and most recently winner of “Folk Band of the Year” at the Scottish Traditional Music Awards. DÀIMH are now fronted by the Gaelic firmament’s most rapidly rising star, Ellen MacDonald, on vocals. Wow!
Also appearing will be BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year winner 2015, CLAIRE HASTINGS. Claire has a lifelong passion for Scottish music which shines through in her captivating performances. She also does a pretty convincing ‘Vincent Black Lightning’ and is an accomplished songwriter. Accompanying Claire will be one of Ceòl Cholasa’s finds from last year, JENN BUTTERWORTH. Jenn will also be appearing as one half of Jenn Butterworth and Laura-Beth Salter, back by popular demand after delighting last year’s audience.
Coming all the way from the U.S.A. where they have become something of an institution, will be Rebecca Hall and partner Ken Anderson, known collectively as HUNGRYTOWN. Rebecca and Ken play a delicious blend of acoustic based folk music, a touch of Americanna with harmonies to die for. Often delicate, often reflective, their music comes from the heart and the soul. “I love the sound of Rebecca Hall’s voice; there’s a sweetness, and a worldly wisdom, in perfect balance.” — Roger McGuinn. A real coup for Ceòl Cholasa!
Regular visitors will fondly remember CARA, that ferocious blend of Scottish, Irish and German Celtic music who made their first ever appearance in Scotland at Ceòl Cholasa in 2013. Now we can introduce you to the band’s alter-ego. Worry not; Gudrun and Juergen are still there and in collaboration with Aaron Jones and Claire Mann make up LITHA. With two fantastic lead singers, four part harmonies, fiery fiddles, box and flute and a rhythm section that has been referred to as “the dream team”, we are prepared to be blown away yet again…
And after all these years, Ceòl Cholasa are delighted to at last be able to bring to the island those West Coast musical stalwarts that are SKIPINNISH. Formed way back in 1999, the fact that the band’s unique and sublime mix of highland tradition and contemporary music now finds a worldwide audience is evidenced by their 2014 single “Walking on the Waves’ reaching Number One in the iTunes World Music Chart. Their show at Celtic Connections was an absolute showstopper and we are privileged indeed to have lured them to Colonsay.
Last but certainly not least, we have the phenomenon that is the
ANGUS NICOLSON TRIO. Young Skye piper and whistle player Angus Nicolson has consistently demonstrated, with percussionist Andrew MacPherson and guitarist Murdo Cameron, to be a model of concentrated firepower and musicality. For such a compact line-up, the tonal, dynamic and rhythmic variety their sound encompasses is hugely impressive, matching spring-loaded force with superb ensemble synergy. Not to be missed!

Roll on September!
